Types of maritime transport and varieties of containers for the transportation of goods by sea
Maritime transportation of cargo in containers is carried out on specialized cargo ships – container ships. Modern container ships are fully automated vessels. A team of 25 to 30 people is enough to service them, which also significantly reduces transportation costs.
The type of container is selected depending on the volume, weight and other properties of the cargo to be moved. Most cargoes are transported in the most economical container – universal rectangular containers. The main characteristic of such containers is the length of the container in feet: 10, 20, 30 and 40 feet. Universal containers have many pluses:
- High safety of goods;
- Loading and unloading works are performed as quickly and inexpensively as possible;
- A container ship accommodates a large number of standard containers, so space on the ship is cheaper.
Specialized containers are used for non-standard goods: refrigerated containers, “cisterns” for liquid (bulk) cargoes, containers for transportation of bulk cargoes, vehicles, especially valuable or dangerous goods.
